Activity Goal
To raise awareness of national guidelines on the management of AF; identify gaps in patient care; and improve patient risk assessment, education, and treatment adherence.

Introduction
Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects more than 2 million adults in the United States and is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke. Many patients with AF do not adhere to their prescribed antiarrhythmic and/or antithrombotic therapy, often because they experience drug-related side effects or do not understand the risks associated with AF and the need for treatment. To help clinicians become aware of their personal practice gaps in the management of patients with AF in relation to national guidelines, Practicing Clinicians Exchange (PCE) developed the AF Practice Improvement Program. This newsletter reviews key aspects in the clinical care of patients with AF and summarizes the findings from this Practice Improvement Program.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Apply clinical risk assessment tools to determine the risk of thromboembolic events in patients with AF
  • Explain the risks of AF and the importance of treatment adherence to patients with AF
  • Develop strategies to increase adherence to AF management guidelines based on identified gaps within clinician practice patterns
